The Ulster Cycle

Patrick Brown is a webcomic writer/artist from Belfast. His influences include Eddie Campbell, John Wagner, Hergé, Charles Keeping, Donna Barr and Eric Shanower.

Current work

He is currently working on The Ulster Cycle, an ongoing historical adventure story set in Iron Age Ireland and inspired by Celtic mythology. The first storyline, Ness, followed the daughter of the king of Ulster as she turned outlaw to pursue an illegal quest for vengeance. The 72-page story ran irregularly from 15 May 2007 to 9 July 2008. The second storyline, The Cattle Raid of Cooley, began weekly serialisation on 6 August 2008. Set two generations after Ness, it adapts the epic Táin Bó Cúailnge. The latest installment, page 3, was posted on 20 August.

Background

Active in the UK minicomics scene in the late 1990s, he created and published the six part near-future science fiction thriller A Virtual Circle (1995-1998) and the one-shot romantic fantasy Under The Bed (1996), both improvised in ink, with no script or pencils. He also created a short detective comic, Tamara Knight in The Liaison Affair (1995), and the satirical leaflet-comic Guilty As Charged (1996). In 1997 he was invited to contribute to Superstate Funnies, an anthology of European comics published by the Caption small press convention, and created Communication, a wordless three page vignette about office life. He moved onto the web in 1999, publishing Communication and a colour edition of Tamara Knight online.
